Commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch is now in talks with Universal to direct the remake of Creature From the Black Lagoon. Rinsch is a protégé of director Ridley Scott and has accomplished an impressive reel of credentials while working for RSA, the advertising company owned by Ridley and his brother Tony. At one point Rinsch was orbiting the as-yet untitled Alien prequel project.

Breck Eisner is keeping the faith that his remake of Creature From the Black Lagoon will eventually move out of development hell and into production. While interviewing the director on the set of The Crazies, Arrow in the Head asked Eisner to give us the latest on how he imagines the new Creature movie in his mind's eye:
"I want it to be scary. It's a bigger movie, so it's not an R rated scary, it's gonna be a PG-13 scary. Creature takes you to a place you've never been before, it's one of the last untamed places on the edge of the Earth where you find this creature that has been living and hiding there forever, basically. It's definitely going for a dark adventure tone, but I want it to be scary."

At the press roundtable for The Tale of Despereaux, screenwriter Gary Ross was asked what was happening with Creature From the Black Lagoon. Ross, who is the son of the original Creature From the Black Lagoon screenwriter Arthur A. Ross, said that the project is "actually moving forward," and that he will also be a producer on the new Creature.
"It's not going to be campy," Ross explained. "It's not a reference to what the original was. It's not reverential that way. We take it seriously. We found some scientific underpinnings for it which my dad actually found in the original. He based it on a lungfish he found around that time, a lot of that was his. We're not approaching it in a campy, retro sort of way."
Collider has more quotes from Gary Ross on the project.
