If you want to learn how a screenplay can change between drafts, read the review of Jon Spaihts rewrite of The Darkest Hour on the Courier 12 website. Reviewer John Gary read both the original draft, written by M.T. Ahern and Leslie Bohem, and the more recent Spaihts draft dated November 2009. Some of the major changes between versions is a change in settings (old: Nebraska, new: Moscow) and reducing the number of main characters down from eight principals to four. The reviewer also assesses the changes to the story and greatly prefers Spaihts' version over Ahern and Bohem's angle.

Filming has once again begun on The Darkest Hour production after wildfires in Russia suspended work for six weeks. Because of the cloudy quality of light and the air quality, filmmakers decided to wait until the summer fires were better under control or put out. The smog has lifted and cleared away, allowing the production to get the better exterior shots of Moscow's buildings and its skyline.
