Producer Roy Lee told Slashfilm some of the details about the movie's storyline, as well as confirmed the involvement of Tim Burton. We learned that Monsterpocalypse is being developed as a 3D movie; that its makers would like it to arrive in theaters sometime in 2012; Burton is working on the visual appearance of the giant creatures with visual effects legend Ken Ralston; and the storyline will show the giant monsters attacking Earth, the humans building giant robots to fight back against the menace, and then a second wave of monster invasion happens when the humans learn their enemy never left the planet, they just burrowed underneath the surface for a while.

The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog confirms Deadline's original story that DreamWorks has the movie rights to Monsterpocalypse and that Burton is courting the project as possibly his next film. Heat Vision adds the news that screenwriter John August, who has written three previous Burton films (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Corpse Bride) is in negotiations with the studio to pen the screenplay. Also, Monsterpocalypse game creator Matt Wilson will co-produce the feature.

First word about this new project was heard today via Deadline which reported that Tim Burton is in talks to direct the movie. DreamWorks is the alleged movie studio that has quietly secured the film rights to Privateer's popular board game which lets players control giant monsters, robots, alien ships, mutated animals and nightmarish beings as they smash up cities and the countryside.
