With Luc Besson's next film Joan of Arc nearing its end of principal photography, and now that it's a year-and-a-half after the release of The Fifth Element, fans wonder if the sequel will ever be mentioned again. Even though the first picture made its money back it was at best a moderate hit at the box office so Columbia execs are in no rush to turn this into a franchise. Still, it remains within the realm of possibility that the sequel could be greenlit one day. As for right now, the best man to ask if there'll be a follow-up film would be Luc Besson himself -- and he hasn't made a public comment since the press junket days for the first film.

An unconfirmed report appearing on Dark Horizons states that Bruce Willis has signed on to the sequel. It's also reported there that Mira Sorvino is not involved with the project, as might have been rumored in the past.

Apparently, Luc Besson's first draft of The Fifth Element was 400 pages long. At the recommendation of film executives investing in the project, Besson chopped up the story that he originally had imagined while in high school and concluded it at the halfway point. The story is that the first part of the larger story that Besson had in mind became The Fifth Element film and that the second half would be the sequel, tentatively titled Mr. Shadow (the name of the dark force that was rushing toward Earth).
