Warner Bros. decided to get a head start and release the first trailer for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows earlier than expected. (Never fear, the trailer will still play in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.)
Enjoy this early preview of the next Holmes and Watson sleuthing adventure.

A casting scoop came out of the blue when actor Stephen Fry appeared on yesterday's Danny Baker radio show broadcast on BBC 5. During the course of the interview Fry said that he had just been cast as Mycroft Holmes in the Sherlock Holmes sequel.
In the Doyle novels, Mycroft is the elder brother to Sherlock and possesses an even more brilliant analytical mind than his detective brother. However, Mycroft chooses to not put his sleuthing abilities to work, preferring to hold a job in the government instead.

Following up on yesterday's news that Robert Downey Jr. was no longer attached to star in Cowboys & Aliens, a source for Entertainment Weekly now tells the publication that Downey did indeed drop out of the DreamWorks movie due to a scheduling conflict with Sherlock Holmes 2. While Warner Bros. hasn't as yet greenlighted the movie, the studio is pleased with the box office that the first film has made and is fastracking the sequel. EW's source claims that WB wants filming on Sherlock Holmes 2 to get underway in June.

There's been a rumor that Brad Pitt will make a cameo appearance as Holmes' nemesis in the upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie. While that particular version of the tale has been shot down by its filmmakers as apparently false, now it appears that there was some meat on the bone to it. The Hollywood Reporter is running a story that Pitt has had "discussions" with the film's creators to play the villain in the sequel, not the first film.
Additionally, the trade mentions that Kieran and Michele Mulroney (the married couple that wrote Justice League: Mortal) have nearly been hired to start work on the second film's screenplay.

The first Sherlock Holmes movie is still months away from its release but that hasn't stopped star Robnert Downey Jr. from telling the media that he believes the chances are good for a second appearance by him as the world-famous sleuth.
"I feel like there’s going to be a Sherlock Holmes 2," Downey told MTV Movies Blog. And at the junket for The Soloist Downey told Collider, "Don't even get me started on Sherlock Holmes. I might have a double-franchise by three days after Christmas."
Nothing official has materialized from Warner Bros. or Village Roadshow about whether even the slimmest of manpower has gone into development of Sherlock Holmes 2, so for now we're filing this project under rumored status even if RDJr. thinks it's gonna be a done deal. And who knows, we might indeed be changing this project's status three days after Christmas. The one thing we would like to determine right now is whether Downey and his co-star Jude Law are signed for follow-up films, and if they so, for how many.
