Screenwriter James Vanderbilt has been hired to write the script for Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6 back-to-back. The rumor is that the storylines for both films will be interconnected and possibly serve as a relaunch for the superhero franchise for Sony Pictures should the studio decide to recast.
Vanderbilt was the first writer hired on Spider-Man 4. [Full story]

Is Sony Pictures secretly considering making the fourth and fifth Spider-Man movies back-to-back? According to showbiz industry blogger Nikki Finke they are because it would make it more "cost effective" for the studio to film two Spider-Man movies at once, as well as keeping the logistics easier to manage for the same creative team from the first three films (according to Finke director Sam Raimi and star Tobey Maguire are "locked in" for #4.)
While a screenplay exists for Spider-Man 4 (the identity of the villain is still not known), it's natural to wonder whether any of the storyline from Spider-Man 4 would crossover into Spider-Man 5 if both pictures were shot and produced at the same time -- and whether Sony is making plans for such a thing to happen.
