After two years of inactivity, word has broken that Mummy director Stephen Sommers is in talks to helm and co-write a new big screen version of Tarzan for Warner Bros. If Sommers' deal gets formalized he would pen the script with Stuart Beattie (30 Days of Night, Collateral). Sommers has been working with Beattie on G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra for Paramount Pictures, due out in theaters next summer. Jerry Weintraub (the Ocean's 11 pictures) remains onboard as a producer.
When we last heard any Tarzan news it was Hellboy director Guillermo del Toro who was the top choice to direct the picture. At the time John August (Big Fish, Charlie's Angels) was hired to come up with a new interpretation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs character, a British-born nobleman who was raised by jungle apes from an early age. The 100-year anniversary of the first of Burroughs' ape-man adventures, Tarzan of the Apes, takes place in 2012.
