Michael Fassbender is on a roll. After supporting roles in Zack Snyder's 300 and Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Fassbender's popped into the bigger public consciousness with turns as Magneto in X-Men: First Class, David Cronenberg's A Dangerous Game and Ridley Scott's upcoming Prometheus, but he's continuing to honor the connections he made earlier in his acting career. For instance, he's just agreed to star in director Steve McQueen's new period drama Twelve Years a Slave, which would mark the third time he's worked with this particular director.
Twelve Years a Slave is based on the writings of Solomon Northup, a black man who lived during America's era of slavery in the mid-19th century. Northup was born a free man in Washington, D.C., but was kidnapped and sold into slavery in America's south. He remained a slave working on a southern plantation for 12 years until such time as his rescue. Chiwetel Ejiofor (2012, American Gangster) has already been cast as Northup.
Getting back to Fassbender, he worked with director McQueen first on Hunger in 2008. His second collaboration is on the movie Shame, which is currently playing at the New York Film Festival.
