Passing away at the incredibly young age of 32, comedian Bill Hicks made a gigantic impact in the world of cerebral comedy. Thanks to the era of YouTube and videotape, Hicks' cutting and sarcastic sense of humor (and wicked sense of cutting down some of the slimier aspects of our culture) has made sure that more people know of him today than when he passed away from pancreatic cancer in 1994.
It seems that the legend of Bill Hicks is slated to grow even bigger into the mainstream thanks to a film based on the man's life and slated to now be directed by Russell Crowe. The Oscar-winning actor of Gladiator has been a champion of makin a biopic film of Hicks' life and ascent in comedy since 2008. At the time Crowe was attached to play Hicks in the movie, but now that appears to have changed.
News of this turn of events broke via The Telegraph and a quote they ran from Mark Staufer, an old friend of Crowe's who has also written the screenplay for the Bill Hicks movie.
"Bill Hicks' life is tragically short, but spectacularly interesting," Staufer told the paper. "The screenplay has gone through a number of drafts and we'll go into production early next year."
Crowe is busy shooting the biblical movie Noah for director Darren Aronofsky right now in Iceland, but after he's completed his duties there he plans on moving ahead with casting.
"It is a huge role for someone, made all the more special, or downright scary, by the fact the director is an Oscar-winning actor like Russell," Staufer added.
