Michael Clarke Duncan dead at age 54

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54, from complications suffered from a heart attack he had in July.

Known for his big build and deep voice, Duncan was in the prime of his life. His first movie role was in 1995's Friday, and he had several small parts playing bouncers and muscle men. It wasn't until 1997's Armageddon that he had a meatier role with more lines, playing one of the rough-and-tumble drilling crew drafted into blowing up an approaching asteroid.

You saw his insanity in The Shining, now read Jack Torrance's novel

One of the creepiest moments in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining comes when the wife of Jack Nicholson's character (played by Shelley Duvall) discovers what her writer husband has been up to for all the time spent in their snowbound hotel: writing the same 10 words over and over and over again on hundreds of typewritten pages. Four actors walking The Way Back

Colin Farrell, Jim Sturgess, Ed Harris and Saoirse Ronan are in talks to star in director Peter Weir's The Way Back. The period drama, set in a Siberian gulag circa 1942, tells the story of a group of soldiers who break out from their prison and flee across the desolate landscape.

Tron sequel finds it main user

24-year-old Garrett Hedlund has been cast in the lead role for Disney's sequel to Tron. The Hollywood Reporter states that in the film (which now seems to have dropped the "2" numeral from its title and is simply being referred to as Tron) Hedlund's character will follow a similar path as Jeff Bridges' Kevin Flynn in the 1982 original where he is whisked into the digitized world and has to fight his way out by playing video games where losing means true death.

McG dives 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

As he finishes post-production on Terminator Salvation, the film's director is close to promising the next dance to a rival studio. McG, the man without a vowel to his screen name, will direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo for Walt Disney Pictures.

Mickey Rourke is an Expendable

The man is definately back. Just as he's enjoying killer reviews for his mesmerizing performance in The Wrestler, newly reinvented Mickey Rourke has landed a key role in Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables. Rourke will play an arms dealer who supplies the Expendables with the ammo and weapons they need to take down the South American dictator they're after.

The Mutant Chronicles sets release date

After sitting on the shelf for three years Edward Pressman's Mutant Chronicles movie is finally going to see the light of day. The sci-fi action flick will premiere on video on demand on March 27, 2009 and then have a limited roll-out in select cities on April 24. It ain't sexy but at least it's something.

Does killing giants for D.J. mean no Last Man?

Variety breaks the word that D.J. Caruso, director of The Salton Sea, Disturbia and Eagle Eye, has been hired by New Line Cinema to helm a fantasy movie titled Jack the Giant Killer. The mag says that the story will take "an adult look at the Jack and the Beanstalk legend," centering on a young farmer named Jack who is called upon to rescue a princess kidnapped by a giant.

A Doctor Strange meeting?

As fanboy rumors go this one doesn't have much corroborating evidence to back up the speculation, but that's alright since it makes it up in pipe dream speculation. The story goes that one of Slashfilm's readers spotted George Clooney, director Ridley Scott and Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel having a meeting together just before the Christmas holidays hit.

Who director pulls the trigger on Jonah Hex

It's a little bit of a leap from directing an animated, family friendly movie based on a well-known childrens book author to calling the shots for a six-gun shooting cowboy cursed with a face that even his mother couldn't love but that's just what Jimmy Hayward is going to be doing. After delivering Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who to 20th Century Fox last spring and watching it gross over $150 million dollars domestic at the box office, Hayward's next picture will be the live-action Jonah Hex film that's been stuck in development hell for years.
