Michael Clarke Duncan dead at age 54

Actor Michael Clarke Duncan has passed away at the age of 54, from complications suffered from a heart attack he had in July.

Known for his big build and deep voice, Duncan was in the prime of his life. His first movie role was in 1995's Friday, and he had several small parts playing bouncers and muscle men. It wasn't until 1997's Armageddon that he had a meatier role with more lines, playing one of the rough-and-tumble drilling crew drafted into blowing up an approaching asteroid.

[REC] screenwriter opening a futuristic POD

Spanish writer/director Luis Berdejo grabbed international attention when the screenplay for his 2006 horror film [REC] became a underground hit. When American movie studio Screen Gems came calling to remake [REC] for western audiences as Quarantine, Berdejo leveraged his elevated standing to direct The New Daughter, a thriller starring Kevin Costner now in post-production. Now he's inked a deal that will see him write and direct a science fiction thriller called POD.

Dark Knight debut breaks Blu-ray sales record

In its first day of release Warner Bros. sold 600,000 copies of The Dark Knight on the Blu-ray format, shattering the previous record by more than double. Paramount's Iron Man sold 260,000 copies on Blu-ray on its first day of release when it came out on September 30.

First screenshot, details from X-Men Origins: Wolverine game

Activision has released details about its upcoming video game tie-in for X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Slated for release to coincide with the movie's May 1, 2009 opening date, the action brawler will be out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS2, PSP, Nintendo Wii and DS and PC platforms.

Spirit stars walk the carpet

Scarlett Johansson, Eva Mendez, Samuel L. Jackson and director Frank Miller all showed up at the Berlin premiere for The Spirit and The Superficial has a dozen snapshots of the quartet posing on the red carpet to show the world. Don't expect to see any evening dresses on the lovely ladies and you won't be disappointed. Poor Frank only mattered enough to get photographed once. It's all about the babes at these things, isn't it?

Pitt to search for Lost City

Brad Pitt will produce and star in The Lost City of Z, a dramatic adventure based on early 20th century explorer and real-life adventurer Colonel Percy Fawcett. Pitt will play Fawcett in the Paramount Pictures movie which will be directed by James Gray (We Own the Night, The Yards).

Rock of Ages musical movie bound

The latest musical production to find its screen rights snapped up by Hollywood is the off-Broadway production of Rock of Ages. New Line Cinema will make a feature based on the hit musical which opened in October with the author of the book that the musical is based on, Chris D'Arienzo, writing the screenplay as well as directing the picture.

Kung Fu Panda director adopts We3

Movie producer Don Murphy (Transformers, From Hell) tells Shock Till You Drop that a director has been found for We3, the adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo comic book series and it's John Stevenson, the guy behind DreamWorks' Kung Fu Panda. While Stevenson made a lateral move in terms of the kind of furry characters he'll be seeing, We3 is light years removed from the family oriented animated story that Panda offered.
