Marvel pacts on two new MMOs

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Marvel Entertainment and game development company Gazillion Entertainment have announced their plans to create and release at least two massive-multiplayer online (MMO) video games based on Marvel's pantheon of superheroes.

One MMO is being aimed at younger game players, kids and pre-teens, and is called Super Hero Squad. Based on the kids action figure line, gamers will be in control of stylized, younger-looking counterparts of well-known Marvel heroes like the Hulk, Spider-Man, Captain America and Wolverine. The second announced MMO is called Marvel Universe and is aimed at the older PC and console gaming demographic. On that project both companies had scarcely anything else to mention, just the promise that more info about Marvel Universe would be forthcoming in the months ahead.

This isn't the first time that Marvel has tried to develop an MMO based on their thousands of superheroes. Back in 2006 the comic book publisher had signed a deal with Cryptic Studios, makers of the City of Heroes MMO, to develop a new MMO featuring heroes and villains from the Marvel universe. Unfortunately the partnership fell apart and the two companies parted ways less than two years after the game's announcement.

In a press release Simon Philips, the president of worldwide consumer products for Marvel Entertainment said, "Marvel’s library features a large and world-renowned stable of characters, making it tailor made for massively multiplayer entertainment that will appeal to a wide audience eager for more opportunities to interact with these iconic character franchises. Gazillion’s excellence in casual and AAA MMOs makes this an ideal partnership to fully leverage this powerful entertainment arena, bringing fans an exciting, interactive experience with the Marvel brand."

No ETA for either Marvel MMO was given.

I'm still playing City of Heroes/Villains nearly every day. Some of my buddies think it's getting stale, though, so we might move on to something else, perhaps Champions Online or DCU Online whenever they hit. I can't handle anything grindy like WoW or LotR. They're too frickin' involved. I already have a job during the day. I don't want to have to work at a job to play a frickin' game.
