21-year-old Karen Gillan has been chosen to become the latest companion to the new face of Doctor Who. Gillan will appear alongside Matt Smith when he makes his debut as the 11th Time Lord in the fifth season of the new Who series come 2010.
"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," Gillan said of her new job.
While this job will earn her a steady paycheck it isn't the first time she appeared in Doctor Who. Gillan played a Soothsayer in the fourth season episode "The Fires Of Pompeii". Former Doctor Who companion Freeman Agyeman, who played Martha Jones, also got her start on the program by appearing as a minor character.
BBC Television exec Piers Wagner says that the redheaded Gillan brings "energy and excitement" to the part. It was when Who producers watched Gillan screentest with Matt Smith and saw the duo's chemistry together that they knew they had found the right actress for the part.
David Tennant is departing Doctor Who after playing the tenth incarnation of the alien Time Lord through three seasons and four television specials. Tennant will play the Doctor in three more TV specials to be broadcast in November and December of this year.
