News about a remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarzenegger sci-fi/actioner Total Recall isn't that fresh. The project's been spinning its wheels in development hell's mud for two years, going nowhere fast. Producer Neal H. Moritz might have just given his project the tow its needed by getting Underworld and Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman attached to helm the remake.
Wiseman is in final talks to direct the movie for Columbia Pictures, with Salt and Ultraviolet writer Kurt Wimmer having already penned the screenplay. How much of the original Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale and how much of the '90 Arnie flick will go into the new Total Recall remains to be revealed, but my gut is telling me it'll be more of the latter.
"I've always been fascinated with Philip K. Dick's short story, and I'm excited at that prospect of diving even deeper into the type of world it evokes and the questions it asks. I love that the most crucial mystery our character is trying to solve is the one of his own soul," said Wiseman in a press release issued today.
"I have been trying for years to work with Len and fortunately we finally found a great project that he loves as much as we do," added Moritz. "Len is terrifically talented and we know he is the right director to re-imagine Total Recall for a new generation of fans."
The president of the studio, Matt Tolmach, said this soundbite: "Len has an incredible love of the genre and a great gift for action. He'll bring a contemporary feel to the film while taking care with everything we love about Philip K. Dick’s original story."
Yup, sounds like it'll be Arnie on the red planet, take two.
