Chris Pratt leads Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, February 5, 2013
The leading man has been found for Marvel Studios' big budget, live action Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and it's Chris Pratt. He can currently be seen on-screen as one of the Navy SEALs that took down Osama bin Laden in Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty.
Pratt won the role over what Deadline reports was a sizeable number of other contenders including another Zero Dark Thirty actor, Joel Edgerton; Cloud Atlas' Jim Sturgess; Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables); and Jack Huston from HBO's Boardwalk Empire.
By choosing Pratt as their intergalactic leading man, Marvel is making a sizeable bet that his presence will be enough to give a earthbound perspective to the cosmic action. Since the remainder of the Guardians team are all aliens, Pratt will have to ground the movie for the average joe to buy into a talking tree (Groot) and gun-toting raccoon (Rocket Raccoon).
Pratt will play Star-Lord, a.k.a. Peter Quill. In the comics Quill discovers that his father was an alien. This gives him the push to leave Earth and lead a team of extraterrestrial outcasts to protect our home solar system from the galactic dangers and enemies out there in outer space.
Marvel has targeted its Guardians of the Galaxy movie for an opening date of August 1, 2014.
