Destiny reveals itself to gamers

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, February 20, 2013

The legagy of Halo video game franchise hangs high over the sense of anticipation for Destiny, the company's next video game. The success of Halo was bigger than anyone, including its owner Microsoft, ever dreamed of: not only did Halo become one of the handful of video games that attained mainstream attention, it remains just as popular ten years after the first game as it did a console generation ago.

Bungie is betting a considerable amount of their reputation that Destiny will reach, if not capture, Halo greatness. After a four-game exclusive contract with the Xbox 360 owner, Bungie struck out on their own and started secret development on Destiny, their next sci-fi action title. In November 2012 concept artwork and a basic premise about Destiny leaked out on the internet, and that whet the appetite of gamers to know more about the title.

Destiny's concept is this: it's 700 years after an apocalyptic event nearly destroyed all of humanity. Mankind's colonies in space were wiped out at the same instant that all cities on Earth were, save for a small city-sized space directly underneath The Traveller, a moon-sized object that stopped above Earth's surface. For whatever unknown reason The Traveller saved a pocket of Earth's people and protected them, allowing the survivors to build the last city of humans. Now, seven centuries later, humans are starting to venture back out into the corners of Earth and space, and they're finding that aliens have taken over our fallen cities.

Bungie has a lot to risk on Destiny, but its rewards could be just as great, if not more, than what they made from Halo. Now that the company is independent from Microsoft they can own all of Destiny. If the game is a hit on the same level as Halo, then this new gaming property could generate billions of dollars of revenue for the company.

What's interesting is that, finally, this week Bungie has released their first official promo video for Destiny. I don't think that it's a coincidence that today is supposedly the day that Sony will officially announce their next gen console, the PlayStation 4. Microsoft still hasn't formally announced its next gen system, supposedly called the Xbox 720 or Xbox Infinity, so an announcement about what the makers of Halo have been up to since leaving Microsoft's fold has gathered considerable attention from the press.

Here is the first video that Bungie release about Destiny titled "Pathways Out of Darkness":
