Lego movie being put together brick by brick
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, August 11, 2009
With Transformers and G.I. Joe films making a mint for Paramount Pictures, is it any wonder that Warner Bros. wants to make a Lego movie?
Sherlock Holmes producer Dan Lin is developing the project and has placed screenwriters Dan and Kevin Hageman to write an action-adventure, family-oriented comedy design to appeal to kids, their parents and their parents' parents, in short, a four quadrant picture. The Lego corporation is also being very hands on with the development of the film. It's been going on secretly for a year but with the thunder of G.I. Joe's $56 million dollar opening weekend, now seemed the best time to announce it to the world. Warners wants to make the movie using CG which makes solid business sense considering that this kind of animated movie has produced a better-than-average hit ratio.
But what could the Lego movie's story be about? For inspiration the film's developers may be looking to the bestselling video game console Lego titles like Lego Batman, Lego Star Wars and the upcoming Lego Rock Band. There's also Disney's Toy Story franchise as proof that, if characters can be thought up that honor the toyline but also expand on its youthful trappings, making a movie about a child's playthings can be very profitable.
