Big Deal.

As long as the legitimate political and economic issues driving Muslim wrath against the West remain unaddressed, it matters little whose name the lamestream media chooses to post as the Islamic bogeyman.

Expect much liberal Democratic chestthumping; followed by inevitable terrorist reprisals against Americans and other Westerners; followed by agonizingly naive lamentations along the lines of, "Why do these people hate us?  After all we've done for them?!"

Seen it before, will see it again....

I believe that Osama bin Laden was not responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

I furthermore believe that this announcement will provide the flagging Obama Administration with a face-saving rationale to begin the long-overdue withdrawal from Afghanistan, America's longest war since..... well, all of them.

Thereby pre-empting those pesky voices who have been calling for withdrawal for months, if not years.

Not that this means US forces will be totally removed from Afghanistan or any other strategic Central Asian assets anytime soon.  Oh no, as the "withdrawal" from Iraq proves, just because you say you're leaving, doesn't mean you're really actually gone.

Not unlike some alcoholics I have known.

Remember when Heath Ledger died and Harry Knowles made a hasty post to let Talkbackers know all of Ledger's Dark Knight scenes had been shot?  (That's what was really important, after all.)  Well, look what he's done now.

The CNN article I read mentioned that people gathered outside the White House chanting "USA, USA" and singing "Hey hey hey, goodbye."

Then I wished that the human race would go extinct.

Wow, rich assholes killed another rich asshole. Surely this  is a victory for the common man.

let me address Space Tycoon:

you're wrong... Osama Bin Laden WAS directly responsible for the 9/11 attacks. there really is no way that any sane rational human being can see otherwise, it's akin to saying "well i do not believe that Darth Vader was the central antagonist in Star Wars" because he WAS and everybody knows he was. you Are wrong.

also i'd go so far as to say that anyone that decides not to praise the US military, CIA and the Strike forces that did this (and the President of the United States) right now: the bitchers, the whiners, the moaners and complainers of US democracy YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!! (and those of us that arent sleeping) are yes Anti-American. Because today we actually got the job done... something IDIOT G.W.Bush never did acomplish dispite his "Mission Accomplished" snafu.

AMERICA: FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and yes Hi, My Name Is Gus, one rich asshole (he's called the President of the United States) did kill another rich asshole (the #1 most wanted fugitive EVER) only because us poor slobs could not pull this off .. so he told the military black ops strike force tht he had positive intel on the mansion and to go drop in uninvited and kill everybody... luckly nobody was hurt, killed or injured on our side, not because we rule... it's because the US Military is smart and we actually have the technology at our disposal to get this job done...

but to keep it secret? WOW thats REALLY impressive.

the human race is comprised of some truely sick fucks... but today we got to celebrate the death of the man responsible for the deaths of 3,000 innocent lives nearly 9.5 years ago... and all I can hear is Bill Pullman's speech from the movie Independence Day as we won that battle: "TODAY WE DECLARE OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY...WE WILL NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT!!!"

so anyway Space... fuck you if you believe we did not execute the right man.. we did.. Period. go away clinging to your stupid radical insignificant little worthless 9/11 conspiracy theories because you are wrong... the American People won today, and we do not need you to cheapen this glorious US victory over the war on Terror and Military achievment! TODAY WE WON!

AND NO.. this definilty does NOT mean we pull our troops out of Afganistan. that would be a huge mistake!!!!

Oh Happy Mother Fucking Day... Osama bin Laden is DEAD!

I don't think that much will change in the long term.  We took down a figurehead.  Sure, he was a reprehensible human being, and I applaud our troops who executed the plan and helped coordinate it.

However, someone else will take his place and the hunt will start anew.

What I find odd is that he was already given a burial at sea?! Didn't we just get this guy last night?

I assume they buried him at sea to prevent supporters from turning his gravesite into some sort of shrine and/or stealing his body to claim he was "assumed into heaven" or whatever. (?)

I think they should have crucified him, just to see if they could start a new religion.

Dead men tell no tales. UBL would have had some interesting testimony about his long years of dealings with the CIA...

I dunno. People seem to be pretty entrenched with god. You'd think that things like the Holocaust might give people the idea there wasn't some benevelent being watching over them and protecting them.

I wasn't going to respond to your whitehot, rabid-chimp-foaming-at-the-mouth rant, but now that I have had some coffee I can't help but request clarification on two points:

mckracken wrote:

Obviously al-Qaeda were instrumental in the attacks. But I've read some serious discussion regarding OBL's actual operational role in 9/11, or lack thereof. What evidence have we been given that unequivocably proves bin Laden was THE MAN responsible for the planning, financing, strategy and orchestration of the attacks? I've always had the impression he took credit for it after the fact.

Oh, wait, you already gave me this little nugget:

Again, perhaps you can share your considerable strategic knowledge; what more do you hope to gain from occupying Afghanistan for another decade or two?

They did it so quickly in order to keep with the Muslim custom of burying a person within 24 hours of his death. As far as the burial *at sea* is concerned, I'd venture the same guess as Gus.

McKasscrack? c'mon space i know you can do better than that one....

besides everybody already knows i'm an asshole, sometimes i just love proving it.

bin Laden FORMED Al Quida in 1989, that is why he took credit for it, because it was his terror group and he was the mastermind.

ok, so what would have been your solution? to let this "figurehead" roam free for the next 10, 20 or 30 years till he eventually dies of natural causes while we sit idly by and blow holes in other third world shitholes like Iraq, Libia or Afghanistan, all the while making ourselves look bad to their innocent citizens?

no. we went in and took out FOUR or five people: our target, his wife, his son and a courier or two.. job done.

only time will tell if we'll become more safe now with Osama dead than when he was alive.

Um.. since the remainder of the job of actually cleaning up all the leftover shitheads (AKA: Al Quiada) still needs to be done, our GI's still need to be over there blowing them off the face of the earth.

My main issue with this whole "War on Terror" mentality is the idea that we can end a war against an idea by merely killing some of the people who espouse that idea.

History has proven otherwise.

al-Qaeda started life as an Islamic resistance group opposed to non-Islamic interference (or control) in the governance of Muslim (mostly Middle Eastern and South Asian) countries.  Western governments, mainly the United States and Israel, had realized the value in backing anti-communist Islamic movements as far back as the 1950's.

Where do you think Iran's anti-communist Ayatollah Khomeinei received some of his earliest support?  Or Hamas for that matter.  The answer might surprise you.

Say what you will about fundamentalist Sunnis, Shi'ites, or what have you... back in the day they hated atheistic Marxist communism with a passion.  They were willing to fight and die to stop it.... or at least, get others to do it in their name.

Fast-forward several years to 1991-ish... the Soviets have been driven out of Afghanistan, their communist puppets are being executed en masse in Kabul, the Eastern Bloc collapses, Westerners are united in celebration of their own excellence.  Nevermind the disastrous consequences for those left behuind in post-communist countries.

al-Qaeda turns to another goal: uprooting Western control of Muslim countries in general, for example Israel's ongoing occupation of the West Bank and Gaza.  At the time they were considered also-rans, a spent force no longer relevant in the post-Cold War world.  Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait in 1990, (apparently greenlit by Washington beforehand) apparently gave them a new lease on life.

As we all know now, a-Q's desire to take on Hussein's army was rejected out of hand early on.  Instead of backing an all-Arab guerilla campaign against Iraq which could very well have kept a local regional crisis from turning global, the suddenly unipolar USA decided to act. In the absence of opposition from a once-strident Soviet Union, who had been one of Iraq's many backers, Iraq became the new global menace, in the eyes of the useless US media.

I am ashamed to say that at the time, I myself bought this tripe.

The Iraqi people were subjected to years of punishing economic sanctions, which destroyed much of the progress that Saddam's Baathist government had managed to achieve.  Under President Clinton, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis died as a result of these sanctions.  At least a half-million of them children.  Madeleine Albright was later to assert that this record of death was "worth it".

al-Qaeda was re-energized in the 90's due to the perceived weakness of Arab governments in responding to US power.  Sadly, they chose the methodology of terrorism.  The record since then speaks for itself.

Was 9/11 truly the result of a handfull of Arabs pissed off at foreign intrusion into their lands and determined to replace said interference with localized Islamic governance?

Or was it the result of some sinister US government-corporate conspiracy to foment decades-long war in the Middle East, thereby reaping the short-term benefits of the resulting exorbitant military spending, corporate welfare and control over foreign, mostly Asiatic, sources of energy for generations to come.

I honestly do not know, nor will I draw any binding conclusions here.  I do know that celebrating the death of one guy who rocks the mike whenever a bomb goes off somewhere in the troubled Muslim World will not bring peace, nor will it bring closure.

There could very well be another 9/11, or 7/7.  It could very well happen in Canada next time, in fact I think we are overdue.  When it does happen, I hope we will take a moment from our grief to reflect on how and why such an event goes from an idea to a bloody reality.
