August 1, 2011 - Here There Be Monsters / project announced

Brian Helgeland (Robin Hood, L.A. Confidential) has been hired to write the screenplay for Here There Be Monsters, an action/fantasy picture set in the 18th century Revolutionary War era. The protagonist is naval hero John Paul Jones, but the element of the fantastic in the story is the inclusion of sea monsters.

The idea is said to come from Legendary Pictures' chairman Thomas Tull, who will also serve as a producer on the movie. Legendary is chasing after director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Beowulf) to make their film.
