Universal Pictures and Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski are developing a western remake of the 2006 South Korean monster movie The Host. Fredrik Bond will helm the movie for Uni from a script to be written by Mark Poirier. Verbinski will be a producer on the film through his Blind Wink Production company.

The original film was a huge hit in its native country, smashing box office records. The Host follows one family's plight when their youngest member is captured by a tentacled water monster. With the authorities believing the young girl dead, her dysfunctional relatives band together to search for the girl by locating the monster's lair.

"It processes a few genres together, and visually it feels close to the stuff I've made over the last few years in commercials, the tonality of humor and the scale," said Fredrik Bond to Variety. Bond comes a background directing commericals including campaigns for Nike, Levi's and Adidas.

Also producing on the American remake will be Paul Brooks and Vertigo's Roy Lee and Doug Davison.
