April 5, 2009 - Fast and Furious / biggest April opening ever

Fast and Furious had the best April opening weekend ever for a film, taking in a hefty $72.5 million dollars from Friday to Sunday. The movie is playing on 3,461 screens and averaged an incredible $20,950 per venue. Compared to the other opening weekends for past films in the racing car franchise, Fast and Furious also is the best: 2001's The Fast and the Furious netted $40.1m in its opening weekend followed by 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003 with $50.5 million and then in 2006 with The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift which earned $24 million opening weekend. Fast and Furious has already earned more in its opening weekend than Toky Drift did in its entire domestic run at theaters ($62.5 million dollars.)

The previous record holder for best April opening was 2003's Anger Management which grossed $42.2 million.
