Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Posted by Jakester on Sunday, April 5, 2009

The season (series?) finale is next week. I know a lot of the season has been really slow and it's turned a lot of people off because they want to see terminators and explosions all the time.

I honestly don't know how the show could sustain that sort of storytelling. It would bore me to tears eventually because it's the same thing, over and over.

I've really liked the character development we've gotten this season and feel like the little scraps of information we've been getting are leading up to something.

That said, the last two episodes have been pretty freaking wild. I mean, this past week -- Reese?! Wow! Sarah arrested. There's another AI, and Weaver's cryptic comment about how her "daughter's' survival might depend on John Henry.

My spec on Weaver's comment is that she, for reasons unknown, is building John Henry to fight, and ultimately destroy Skynet. She brought Ellison in to teach the AI a sense of humanity because, without it, it would be another Skynet.

I've always thought Weaver is/was using Ellison to teach John Henry to make him "a more efficient killer" and help develop what would/will become Skynet, not to be humanity's protector.

We still don't know which side sent that other Terminator and what its mission is, except he was after Savannah. Perhaps to take Mrs. Weaver itself? or John Henry?

It totally sucked about Reese, though.

did FOX cancel terminator:SCC? I've been watching Dollhouse and Terminator after they air on HULU because Micheal Baldwin and Seth McFarlane told me so

About Derek .. just read this @ nj.com:

Toni Graphia, who wrote "Adam Raised a Cain ...

"As far as killing Derek, what I can tell you is that my boss Josh Friedman, whom I greatly respect for his instincts to "go against the grain" of traditional television, was the one who gave the mandate that Derek's death be true to life -- shocking, quick, with no time for tears. If I had even hinted at writing a big speech or heroic sacrifice, I would have been banned from the Warner Bros lot! LOL. Sarah's getting arrested was something I pushed for in the episode -- I was dying to see that "perp walk" and believe the fans would appreciate it too. Whenever something got cut, I would say, "as long as Sarah does the perp walk, I'm good." Killing Derek was Josh's idea and the way it was portrayed was exactly how he wanted -- the most realistic and therefore the most gut-wrenching and sad in its shocking simplicity. Yes, it's different than how deaths of main characters are usually portrayed, but to the credit of the Fox execs, they trust Josh's strong vision for the show and it has helped make Sarah Connor a unique experience."

Holy crap. I just read MindWalker's post. I missed this week's episode. I just watched a clip on YouTube showing what happened to Derek Reese. I can't believe they killed BAG, but I gotta say that they handed it raw and harsh. No build-up of music, no foreshadowing, just BAM.

I also agree that the writers working on the TERMINATOR show have been doing a solid job and giving us smartly written episodes that don't pander to lowest common denominator, push-the-reset-button storytelling. I really hope that they get a third season.

But MAN! Derek was my favorite character on the show!

Boo! Hiss!

I hated how they killed off Derek. Everything else about that episode was great, but the way they killed him off was just cheap. Sure, they say they wanted it to be shocking, quick, etc, but to me it felt like they were being lazy. He was the best character on the show, and now he's gone. Boo.

Ooops, sorry Pat..

One of these days Mr. Friedman outta come out of the woods and give us a good reason why he offed Derek, everyone's favorite character. Well, after Cameron of course.. ;-)

I completely disagree, Strider. I loved it. Not that I'm at all happy that Derek's gone; he was a great character, but I loved how it was just...he miscalculated, stuck his head out...and got it blown off. you never see that sort of thing happen to a major character in TV and rarely in movies (Executive Decision stands out as an exception).

Oh wait, there was some show quite a few years ago where a chick fell down an elevator shaft. When the doors opened, the elevator wasn't there and she wasn't paying attention and just walked in, and the episode ended. I don't remember what it was, but it wasn't big or dramatic when it happened; just fast and shocking.

what was in the box that was being buried in the graveyard at the end of the episode?

it was a good episode, I confess I dont watch them in order and cant remember what happened in the last episode I watched... I think John Connor's girlfriend was being killed and the asian chick either died or left the show... not sure. it was a few episodes ago.

sorry it never dawned on me that Weaver might be a Terminator despite her actions (and stiff acting)

Jakester, the show you're thinking of was L.A. LAW.

Mckraken wrote: "what was in the box that was being buried in the graveyard at the end of the episode?"

I think that was the cremated remains of Derek being buried in a John Doe grave. I may be wrong as the perp sheet that Ellison was handed by the other cop had an alias for Derek on it, and the grave the box was going into simply had 2009 on it.

I don't like it that Derek was offed at all but the writers did a great job of it. The show is called TERMINATOR after all and you've got to have at least a modicum of possibility that anyone could bite it at any time.

As my wife said after the credits, the Reese boys haven't had much luck hanging out with that Connor woman.

That'd be it, Pat!

I was thinking that we might not have seen the last of Derek. He made a point to Jesse that she wasn't his Jesse, and that she was from a different timeline. Therefore, it is possible that a Derek Reese from some alternate timeline didn't come back until 2009.

I think the "you're not my Jesse" line meant she had changed (lying to him and using Riley as bait) to something else he didn't like, not that she was a "different person".

Whatever future they (might) have planned, I hope it doesn't take Back to the Future Part II into account.

No, the "you're not my Jesse" line referred to the fact that she had not been somewhere that "his" Jesse had. Their futures were similar, but not the same.

hehe... I think I missed this Episode and I'd want to watch it on HULU... whats the episode name?

that last terminator episode I watched was the submarine episode that took place in the future where Summer Glau was given a message from the T-1000 that said simply "No" - how much have I missed?

Oh, it was well before that. In fact, in the first episode w/ Weaver, I think we see her morph from a dude back into herself. But go back like 4 or 5 episodes to the mid-season opener.

Just finished watching the season finale. This show SO needs to get renewed for a third season. That was awesome!

Not only did Josh Friedman, the episode's writer and the show's showrunner, create this great twist, he's also mirrored the premise for TERMINATOR 2: Catherine Weaver's T-1001 is a protector, just like Arnie's T-800 was a good Terminator in T2. And that ending where John gets to go to the future war and meet not just Derek but his Dad!

Fox freakin' better do a season 3!

No matter where you go, there you are.

I agree. That ending was an awesome setup for a completely different third season. Heck, I thought it was interesting that he went to a future where nobody knew who he was, so maybe that's how he originally got there? There are so many implications that could be explored, and I hope they get a chance to do so.

I haven't had a chance to watch more than the teaser so far, but I'm not surprised that Weaver is a protector. I believe I called that some months ago. (yes, I'm awesome)

My vote is for a third season as well. The show is awesome!

HOLY F...!!!!!!!!

Really, amazing twist, totally unexpected. Jakester was right on the money about Mrs. Weaver's intentions.

Man, FOX better not leaves us hanging out to dry. Not now...

who is Weaver protecting? John Henry or the little girl?

Weaver is interested in protecting John Henry because he is also necessary in preventing the rise of Skynet. Now....WHY does she want to stop Skynet? Hmmmm? Are her motives purely altruistic, or does she want something else?

I'd say "Future John" sent her but at this point all we can do is pray we will have our answers in a few months.

It will trully suck if we don't ...

what ever happened to JMS' notion of releasing shows direct to DVD like Babylon 5 Lost episodes... have they stopped toying with the idea of just producing shows for the DVD market and THEN finding a TV distributor for them?

I think Dollhouse and Terminator (if its cancelled) would have faired better by developing an audience that is watching by buying or renting the episodes in an uncut format from say, Netflix or hulu FIRST before ever airing on Television.

you know the very first time I read this, I assumed you meant alternate reality, or that John Conner simply wasnt born yet but this.. THIS throws an entirely new spin on the classic concept of John Connor.

what happened to Weaver? she grabed a jacket between cuts, that editing threw me off... and then she was gone... was that Weaver that was transporting back to 2009 at the very end of the episode? Somebody transported somewhere (or when?)
.. I'm guessing it was Weaver returning to 2009.
