New Mortal Kombat movie given go ahead
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, October 2, 2011
Warner Bros. has asked the director of the recent Mortal Kombat web series to develop a new movie based on the video game franchise.
Kevin Tancharoen directed a short Mortal Kombat: Rebirth film as a proof of concept to the studio that a web series could be done. After generating online buzz, Warner Bros. gave Tancharoen the greenlight to film a 10-part online series which rolled out this past summer to decent viewing numbers. Now the studio has issued a go-ahead for Tancharoen and his writer Oren Uriel to develop a feature length screenplay for a rebooted Mortal Kombat film.
It's been 13 years since the last Mortal Kombat movie (subtitled Armageddon) came out in theaters and effectively ended the movie franchise. Midway games continued to make MK games but eventually fell into bankruptcy, opening the door for Warner Bros.' game division to pick up the fighting game's rights at a firesale price. After a new Mortal Kombat game rejuvinated the fans this year, things look optimistic for a newly retooled movie to add to the franchise's line of products.
