Pixar announces release dates, details for three new movie projects
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Wednesday, April 25, 2012
Right now the nation's theater owners have assembled in Las Vegas for CinemaCon, the event where movie studios hype up their upcoming fares in the effort to whet the appetite (and open the checkbook) of the industry-goers. Studios are flying in talent, both actors as well as key personnel and suits, to present sizzle reels for movies coming out in 2012 and beyond.
At the Disney presentation Pixar's upcoming 2013 and TBA slate took everyone's attention. First up was the reveal of a new Pixar movie project to be directed by Toy Story 3 helmer Lee Unkrich set in the world of the Mexican holiday of Dia de Los Muertos, or translated, "Day of the Dead". This is the annual early November holiday observed in Mexico where the living pause and give remembrance to their loved ones that have passed on. Food, sweets and treats are presented to the spirits so they can also celebrate and commune with their living friends and relatives.
Unkrich's producer on Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo / Cars / Monsters Inc. producer Darla K. Anderson will be the new Pixar movie's producer. Aside from the above details, nothing else was given about the mystery project such as its working title or ETA.
Next, Pixar revealed the release date for two other CG movies they have in their pipeline. One also got a title: The Last Dinosaur, a what if story that supposes the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs 65 millions years ago never smacked into the Earth, which means the thunder lizards are alive and well alongside mankind.
May 30, 2014 is the release date for The Last Dinosaur, and it's being directed by Bob Peterson, a longtime story supervisor and layout artist at Pixar. This is his first feature as a director. Rumor has it that the primary characters in The Last Dinosaur will be a young boy and his pet brontosaurus.
Last but not least comes another untitled Pixar movie, this one being directed by Monsters Inc. helmer Pete Docter and co-directed by Ronnie del Carmen. Pixar/Disney CCO John Lasseter has remarked that this picture takes place entirely within the mind of a young girl, and that her emotions will be presented as characters on the screen.
This untitled Pixar in-your-mind movie has been announced with with a June 19, 2015 release date.
