Dynasty movie to go back in time
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, January 13, 2011
25 years ago the rich and powerful dominated evening television. Soap operas like Dallas, Falcon Crest and Dynasty ruled the air and achieved regular standing in the week's top 5 most watched TV shows. These programs weren't much different in their plots than the standard soap opera fare that could be seen during the daytime on the networks, but when it came to their budgets and displaying their main characters wearing lavish evening gowns, jewels and big 80s hair, the evening soaps had their little sisters beat hands down.
Proving that everything that once was a popular TV show will eventually become a feature movie, plans are afoot to create a movie based on the ABC series Dynasty. Airing from 1981 to 1989, the show gave Joan Collins her second career as a MILF in the top wage bracket. Playing the villainous Alexis Carrington, Collins was the evil bitch that everyone loved to hate (as well as see get into catfights with co-star Linda Evans.) But if you thought that the movie version of Dynasty would recast Alexis, Blake, Krystal and the rest of the catty brood of Carringtons and Colbys as they schemed and fornicated their way through 80s greed and avarice, you'd be wrong. Instead, the movie Dynasty is borrowing a page from the retro success of Mad Men and placing the setting in the 1960s, back when the characters were in their early years.
"It's not the wild and crazy 1960s, but the early Kennedy years," Dynasty creator Richard Shapiro told E!. "It was my daughter Florie's notion to do a prequel, and that sounded very very good to us. It's how young Blake doesn't realize he's the son of Tom Carrington, but then he finds himself at the head of this company and surrounded by assassins and people who want to do him in."
The script is being written (by Shapiro or someone else, it wasn't made clear in E!'s piece), and the producer hopes that this will resurrect the franchise and transform it into a series of movies. If Fox's new X-Men film that's set in the 60s, First Class, does well at the box office, that could be all the impetus needed for Shapiro's wish to come true and a studio take on making the Dynasty movie. So what British 30-something beauty gets to play the new bitchy Alexis and wear lots of fur?
